Magnetic deflection
From Mass Spec Terms
DRAFT DEFINITION
Magnetic deflection
---
The deflection of charged particles in a magnetic field due to a force equal to qv × B where q is the particle charge, v its velocity and B the magnetic field. Magnetic deflection of an ion beam is used for m/z separation in a magnetic sector mass spectrometer.
Considered between 2004 and 2006 but not included in the 2006 PAC submission
This is an unofficial draft definition presented for information and comment.

Magnetic deflection
---
The deflection of an ion beam as a result of the motion of the ions in a magnetic field (the magnetic sector). Motion is generally at right angles to the direction of the magnetic field.
