| |An ion dissociation technique specific to FT-ICRMS where the ion motion is collapsed by collision with a chosen collision gas and then simultaneously excited by a RF pulse which is of slightly lower frequency than the cyclotron frequency of the precursor ion. Dependent upon the phase of the cyclotron frequency and the RF the ions either pick up energy and their orbits expand causing collision with the collision gas or they spin back to the centre of the cell. The small, slow energy gain from these collisions is converted to internal energy that is delocalised throughout the gas phase molecule to produce low energy product ions.
