Radical cation or anion arising formally by ionization of diradicals or zwitterionic molecules (including ylides). In these ions the charge site and the unpaired electron spin cannot be both formally located in the same atom or group of atoms as it can be with a conventional ion. For example, ?????????CH<sub>2</sub>-OH<sub>2</sub><sup>+</sup> is a distonic ion whereas the radical cation of methanol, CH<sub>3</sub>OH<sup>+?????????</sup> is a [[conventional ion]] This term is also used for multiply charged ions such as the distonic oxonium dication H<sub>2</sub>O<sup>+</sup>-CH<sub>2</sub>-CH<sub>2</sub>-OH<sub>2</sub><sup>+</sup> as opposed to the gitonic (proximal) oxonium dication HO-CH<sub>2</sub>-CH<sub>2</sub>-OH<sub>3</sub><sup>2+</sup>.

Distonic ion
Radical ion whose charge and radical sites are neither at the same atom nor in conjugation with each other.
Note 1: For example, CH2-OH2+ is a distonic ion, whereas the molecular ion of methanol, CH3OH+ is a conventional radical cation.
Note 2: In a valence bond description, α-distonic ions have the charge and radical sites on adjacent atoms, β-distonic ions are separated by one atom, γ-distonic ions by two atoms, and so forth.
